What is IVF Treatment?
IVF, or in vitro fertilization, is a complex set of procedures to aid fertility or prevent possible genetic problems. During IVF treatment, mature eggs begin to be collected from the ovaries and are fertilized with the sperm of the father-to-be in a laboratory environment. The fertilized eggs (also known as embryos) are then transferred to the uterus. A full IVF cycle takes a few weeks on average. In some cases, these phases are broken up into different parts, and therefore the process may be longer. IVF treatment is the highest quality form of assisted reproductive procedure. IVF may involve eggs, embryos and sperm from a known or unknown donor. In some cases, a gestational carrier may also be used.
How Many Injections for IVF Treatment?
Injectable drugs in two different formulas are used together in IVF treatment. One of them is used to prevent the egg from ovulating in the early period. The other is preferred to encourage the development of several different eggs. With IVF treatment, the woman is stimulated with several drugs injected just under the skin to develop multiple eggs. Injections to be made under the skin are made with a minimal needle. This needle is in the same shape as the insulin needle used by people with diabetes.
How Long Does IVF Treatment Take ?
IVF treatment starts on the 2nd or 3rd day of the expectant mother’s menstrual period and ends after 15 to 17 days on average. After the embryo transfer, the pregnancy test is checked by waiting 10 days.
How Does IVF Treatment Work ?
For IVF treatment in the first meeting, the reasons for double infertility are explained to the couple who want to start treatment and detailed information about the tests to be performed. There is no obligation to be on a certain day of the menstrual period for the first examination. This evaluation can be done on any day. The stages of IVF treatment are:
- Controlled Egg (Ovarian) Growth Treatment
The expectant mother is examined on the 2nd or 3rd day of her menstrual period, and the doctor evaluates the condition of the ovaries on ultrasound. According to the results, the physician gives some hormone drugs to stimulate the patient’s ovaries and ensure many eggs’ development. The patient is informed about the drugs.
- Egg Collection and Sperm Retrieval Process
After an average of 34 to 36 hours after the cracking needle, the eggs are collected vaginally with a very short surgical procedure under general anaesthesia. The egg retrieval procedure is a painless procedure that takes about 10 minutes under general anaesthesia. Eggs taken into the laboratory are prepared for microinjection. The father-to-be gives a sperm sample into a sterile container with a wide mouth in the sperm room. The sperm taken is sent to the laboratory, where the fertilization process is started after the necessary procedures.
- Fertilization Process
The eggs are evaluated under the microscope in the laboratory environment, and the suitable ones are fertilized with selected sperms and observed for embryo development. After the fertilization process, the eggs are taken into special devices called incubators, which are produced to imitate the uterus environment in the best way. Embryo development is thus monitored daily. Special incubator devices with dynamic embryo imaging systems are used in the laboratory’s growth, follow-up, and selection stages. With these devices, also known as Embryoscopes, embryos can be monitored live without the need for any changes in their environment. Thus, selecting the embryo with the highest pregnancy potential can be made more accurately and safely.
- Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer is the shortest but most important stage of treatment. In this procedure, which is generally painless, anaesthesia may be preferred in very rare cases. It is carried out between the 2nd and 6th days after egg collection, depending on the number of embryos, development, age, previous IVF attempts and many other factors. Embryos that have reached a certain maturity are placed in the uterus with the help of special catheters.
- Post-Transfer Drug
After embryo transfer, drug therapy begins to support the embryo’s attachment to the uterus.
- Pregnancy Test
After the transfer process, a pregnancy test is performed on the 12th day for fresh cycles and the 15th day for frozen cycles.
How Successful is IVF ?
IVF success rate is expressed in two different ways. These factors are the live birth or pregnancy rate. In vitro fertilization success is considered as live birth, considering the loss of babies because the pregnancy of every pregnant woman doesn’t result in childbirth. This achievement is also referred to as the live baby ratio. In vitro fertilization, live birth success rates are around 30% to 35% worldwide. In other words, one out of every three couples can have a child in the first IVF trial.
How To Get IVF Covered By Insurance ?
If you have insurance for your job, nearly half of employers offer infertility treatment to their employees in response to requests. So you can ask your employer for support on insurance coverage for IVF. If other employees are in a similar situation as you, this may also help you. Accordingly, it may be beneficial for you to go to the Human Resources representative and talk about having IVF treatment covered by insurance.
However, if you can contact the insurance company directly, you can review detailed information. If you know your insurance covers IVF treatment, you can call the insurance company. However, if insurance doesn’t cover it, you can request that IVF be covered.
How To Calculate Pregnancy Weeks After IVF ?
In calculating pregnancy after IVF treatment, it is clear which day fertilization occurs, unlike normal pregnancy. Since the natural menstrual cycle is followed during in vitro fertilization procedures, the implantation date of the embryo into the uterus coincides two weeks after the first day of the last menstrual period. The probable date of birth is calculated by adding approximately 38 weeks to the day the embryo is placed in the uterus. If pregnancy occurs in the test to be performed 12 days after the embryo is placed, the gestational week is 4 weeks.
All these last menstrual dates, fertilization dates, gestational week measurements can be confusing for expectant mothers. Because although many people calculate month by month pregnancy, it is necessary to medically calculate pregnancy week by week. In addition, the pregnancy period can also be evaluated by dividing it into 3-month sections. These monthly parts are called trimesters. The trimester plays a very important role in determining the baby’s development and what needs to be done in the follow-up of the pregnancy. The period between 1 and 13 weeks is called the 1st trimester, between 14 and 27 weeks is called the 2nd trimester, and the period from the 27th week to the birth is called the 3rd trimester. Under normal conditions, it is thought that the period until birth will be 40 weeks.
How Many Follicles For IVF ?
During the IVF procedure, the doctor wants to stimulate the ovaries so that several follicles can mature. Anyway, between 8 and 15 follicles are considered a normal amount. During the egg collection process, the doctor aspirates the follicles with a small needle under ultrasound guidance. Not every follicle contains a healthy egg. Therefore, the number of eggs to be taken may be less than the number of quality follicles.
What Can I Do To Help Implantation After IVF ?
The problem of low availability of the uterus, which is the most important factor that can lead to implantation failures, can be affected by many factors. In general, many conditions such as hormonal problems, imbalances, thyroid problems, autoimmune problems, an anatomical problem of the uterus or a problem with the endometrial lining reduce the ability of the uterus to hold and nourish the embryo there. A thorough diagnostic process early in IVF treatment accurately identifies these problems, and most of them should have been treated before the embryo reaches the transfer stage. Only in this way can more successful embryo implantation become a reality by eliminating the failure factors.
Solving the chromosomal problems in the embryo and increasing the ability of the uterus to hold the embryo at a high rate is generally possible with medical procedures. So you need to know that embryo implantation is largely out of your control. Any action you take alone will not have a great contribution or effect on an embryo’s ability to attach or not. However, being too concerned and stressing about improving implantation success can even be harmful in the process. It would be best if you were comfortable, peaceful and stress-free for success in IVF treatment.
If Not Pregnant After IVF, When Does Period Start ?
If the treatment is unsuccessful due to the drugs used for IVF treatment, menstrual irregularity may occur for 1 or 2 months. There is generally no need for any medication in this process, and this problem will resolve itself. If the menstrual period is delayed, it is necessary to wait between 10 and 14 days. If menstruation still hasn’t occurred after this timeout, a doctor should be consulted without delay.
After How Many Weeks IVF Pregnancy is Safe ?
The first pregnancy screening after the IVF procedure takes place between weeks 5 and 7 after treatment. Therefore, if pregnancy occurs in the test performed 3 to 5 weeks after embryo transfer, it is considered safe after this period. So IVF pregnancy is safe after 7 to 10 weeks.
What is A Good Amh Level For IVF?
Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) is the most important blood test that provides information about the ovarian reserve. It is more valuable than the FSH used in the past. It can be measured on any day of the menstrual cycle. A woman’s menstrual period decreases by one more set of eggs. Here, AMH is a hormone that tells you how many eggs are in the eggs. If the AMH value is below 1 ng/ml, this tells the child to hurry. 1-3.3 ng/ml values are within the normal range.
Where To Put Estrogen Patch IVF ?
An estrogen patch may be preferred in some cases in IVF treatment. Estrogen is absorbed through the skin, thanks to the estrogen patch attached directly to the abdomen. The estrogen patch can sometimes cause skin rash, irritation, nausea, and fluid collection.
How To Help Swollen Ovaries After IVF ?
One in three women may experience mild swelling during controlled ovarian stimulation after IVF treatment. This swelling is usually managed with a drastic reduction of activities, drinking electrolyte-rich fluids, complete evacuation of accumulated fluid in the abdomen, and medication for pain and nausea. As pregnancy can worsen this condition, all eggs or embryos of those at risk or experiencing these symptoms are frozen for later transfer. Women need to recognize these signs and be aware of the changes in the body during the IVF cycle. If any of these symptoms occur, it is imperative to consult a doctor.
When To Stop Estrogen After IVF ?
Lack of ovarian activity means that estrogen isn’t produced naturally. Therefore, artificial estrogen support is needed until at least the 9th to 10th week of pregnancy. Estrogen supplementation is stopped as soon as the first menstrual period starts after IVF treatment.
How To Get Best Sperm Sample For IVF ?
In IVF treatment, healthy sperm are selected under a special microscope and injected into the egg. To obtain the best quality embryos from these selected sperms, the shape of the sperm is checked. In other words, the motile tail and head shape of the sperm must be smooth. If the amount of sperm in the man is insufficient, it will be difficult to achieve a pregnancy using the existing sperm. However, the deformity of the sperm obtained from the male also negatively affects the fertilization of the egg. Because fertilization may not occur due to deformity in the sperm, for this reason, to achieve a successful pregnancy in IVF treatment and to obtain a healthy embryo, the sperm must be of good quality both structurally and functionally.
